There is no explicit reference to short-term rentals (STRs) or any definition that distinguishes STRs from long-term rentals in the provided content. The City maintains a “Rental Property Information” page within its Community Development section, which indicates the City tracks rental properties; however, the ordinance text or permitting requirements referenced there are not included in the materials provided. In practice, most Missouri municipalities regulate STRs through zoning, business licensing, transient guest tax (TGT) registration, and property standards; absent clear City evidence in these materials, investors should assume STRs are subject to local zoning and business licensing requirements and must be confirmed with the City before listing or operating.
Bottom line for investors: STRs may be allowed, prohibited, or only allowed conditionally (for example, as a permitted use in certain zoning districts, or by special use permit) — this is unknown from the provided documents and must be verified directly with the City’s Community Development and Code Enforcement divisions.
Given the absence of STR-specific guidance in the provided materials, follow a compliance-first process:
Property and Use Determination
Business License and Registration
Transient Guest Tax (Missouri “Lodging Tax”) and State/Local Taxes
Insurance and Liability
Application and Approval Steps (Typical, To Verify)
Operating Compliance
Based on standard Missouri municipal practice and the City’s presence of relevant departments and programs, you should prepare for:
Business License
Rental Property Registration
Zoning and Use Confirmation
State-Level Tax Registrations
Life Safety/Building Compliance (as applicable)
Community and Neighborhood Standards
Note: The City maintains a Building Permits page and Zoning Information page under Community Development, and the City uses Sonny’s Solid Waste for trash service (Trash Pickup Schedule is available). While these are not STR-specific, they shape operational compliance.

Sikeston is a city located both in southern Scott County and northern New Madrid County, in the state of Missouri, United States. It is situated just north of the "Missouri Bootheel", although many locals consider Sikeston a part of it. By way of Interstate 55, Interstate 57, and U.S. Route 60, Sikeston is close to the halfway point between St. Louis and Memphis, Tennessee and is three hours from Nashville. The city is named after John Sikes, who founded it in 1860. It is the principal city of the Sikeston Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of all of Scott County, and has a total population of 41,143. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 16,291, making it the fourth-most populous city in Missouri's 8th Congressional district behind Cape Girardeau, Rolla, and Farmington, and just ahead of Poplar Bluff which has had a similar population as Sikeston over the last few decades. Before the 2010 census, it had been the second-most populous city in the congressional district.
