Tomah, WI

Tomah is a small city in Monroe County, Wisconsin, with a population of roughly 9,400 residents. Sitting along the heavily traveled Interstate 90/94 corridor, it has long served as a convenient stopover for travelers moving between Madison, Wisconsin and Minneapolis–Saint Paul. The town carries the easy, unhurried character of a rural Midwestern community, surrounded by farmland, wooded bluffs, and the rolling terrain of the Driftless Area. It is perhaps best known as a gateway to some of Wisconsin's most popular outdoor recreation, including the famous Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the larger Wisconsin Dells region, while also serving the nearby Fort McCoy military installation and the Tomah VA Medical Center.

One of the biggest draws within an easy drive of Tomah is the Elroy–Sparta State Trail, a celebrated rail-trail that runs about 25 miles west of town near the neighboring city of Sparta. Stretching roughly 32 miles between Elroy and Sparta, the trail is famous for its three historic railroad tunnels, one of which is nearly a mile long and is unlit, requiring visitors to bring a flashlight. It is considered one of the oldest rail-trails in the United States and draws cyclists, hikers, and snowshoers throughout the warmer months.

About 50 miles to the southeast, the Wisconsin Dells region offers a completely different kind of getaway, centered on the scenic gorges of the Wisconsin River and a dense cluster of waterparks, resorts, and family attractions. Often called the "Waterpark Capital of the World," the Dells is one of the Midwest's most visited vacation destinations, making it a popular day trip or overnight excursion for guests staying in Tomah.

Closer to home, the Fort McCoy military installation lies just north of the city, and the surrounding countryside offers quieter outdoor recreation, including fishing and paddling on Lake Tomah within city limits and hiking in the wooded hills of the Driftless Area. The nearby town of Sparta also markets itself as the "Bicycling Capital of America," a designation tied to the Elroy-Sparta trail and a network of connecting routes that make the area a popular cycling destination in warmer months.

With its central location, easy interstate access, and proximity to both the natural beauty of the Driftless Area and the larger tourism draws of the Dells, Tomah offers a practical and appealing base for short-term rentals. Visitors can enjoy a quieter small-town atmosphere while remaining within a comfortable drive of some of central Wisconsin's most recognizable outdoor and family attractions.
