Foster is a tiny unincorporated community nestled in the foothills of Oregon's Cascade Range, in Linn County along the South Santiam River. With only a few hundred residents, it has the quiet, woodsy feel of a rural Pacific Northwest outpost, surrounded by forest, reservoir water, and a steady stream of travelers passing through on the highway. It is best known for giving its name to Foster Lake and Foster Dam, a popular recreation hub, and it serves as a low-key gateway to the Willamette National Forest and the High Cascades. Foster sits roughly 90 miles southeast of Portland and about 65 miles southeast of Salem, making it a convenient detour for travelers heading east toward Sisters, Bend, or the Mount Washington Wilderness.

Just minutes from the community, Foster Lake is the centerpiece of the area, a long, narrow reservoir created by Foster Dam on the South Santiam River. The lake is well known for its warm-water fishing, with populations of largemouth bass, bluegill, and black crappie, and it draws boaters, kayakers, and swimmers during the summer months. The shoreline is lined with county and private campgrounds, and Sunnyside County Park, a short drive north of Foster, offers picnic areas, a boat ramp, and tent sites right on the water.

A short drive south of Foster along the Santiam River brings visitors to Cascadia State Park, a small but scenic day-use and camping park that anchors the tiny community of Cascadia. The park is famous for its cold mineral spring, which has drawn visitors for generations, and for the trailhead leading to Upper Soda Falls, a 100-foot cascade on Soda Creek. It is one of those classic Oregon spots that feels tucked away and unhurried, with old-growth fir, a rushing river, and an easy walk to a powerful waterfall.

The surrounding Willamette National Forest adds another layer of appeal, with hundreds of miles of hiking, mountain biking, and OHV trails, as well as dispersed camping and alpine lakes within a modest drive. Hikers often use the Foster area to access lower-elevation forest routes or as a stepping stone to higher Cascade destinations like the Three Sisters or Mount Jefferson, both reached by continuing east on Highway 20.

For short-term-rental owners, Foster is a compelling proposition precisely because it is small, scenic, and under-served by hotels.
