Ghent, WV

Ghent is a small unincorporated community tucked into the Appalachian highlands of Raleigh County in southern West Virginia. With a year-round population measured in the low hundreds, it has a quiet, mountain-village character defined by forested ridges, winding country roads, and the changing seasons that transform the surrounding landscape. The community is best known as the home of Winterplace Ski Resort, one of the most popular winter sports destinations in the region, and as a convenient jumping-off point for exploring the broader southern West Virginia outdoors. Ghent sits about 20 miles southeast of Beckley, the county seat and the nearest city of meaningful size, and roughly 65 miles south of Charleston, the state capital.

The defining draw of Ghent is Winterplace Ski Resort, which lies right at the edge of the community. The resort offers downhill skiing and snowboarding on more than two dozen trails, a dedicated snow-tubing park, and beginner-friendly terrain that draws families from across the Mid-Atlantic. In the warmer months, the same mountain hosts events, mountain biking, and scenic lift rides, making it a year-round attraction just minutes from anywhere in Ghent.

A short drive north and east of town brings visitors to Flat Top Lake, a roughly 200-acre mountain lake popular with boaters, anglers, and cabin renters. The surrounding area is laced with quiet back roads, trailheads, and vacation cottages, giving the lake a relaxed, weekender feel that complements Ghent's own low-key atmosphere. About a half-hour northwest in Beckley, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine offers a look at the region's deep mining heritage, with underground tours led by retired miners and a recreated coal-camp village on the surface. The same Beckley area is home to Tamarack, a large showcase for West Virginia artisans, food producers, and craftspeople, often described as the state's official "best of West Virginia" market and a popular stop for visitors passing through the region.

Ghent makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it combines a genuine four-season mountain setting with surprisingly varied attractions within a short drive. Skiers, snowboarders, and snow tubers can stay steps from the lifts in winter, while leaf-peepers, hikers, boaters, and families exploring West Virginia's coal and craft heritage can use the community as a peaceful, scenic home base for the rest of the year.
