Cochrane, WI

Cochrane is a small village in Buffalo County, in the western part of Wisconsin, situated along the Mississippi River. With a population of only a few hundred residents, it has the quiet, low-key character typical of river towns in the Driftless Area, the unglaciated region of the upper Midwest known for its steep bluffs, winding valleys, and pastoral scenery. Cochrane serves as a small gateway to the surrounding bluff country and the Mississippi, and it sits roughly 35 miles southeast of La Crosse, the nearest major city, and just across the river from Winona, Minnesota.

The defining natural feature of the area is the Mississippi River itself, which forms Wisconsin's western border. The riverfront at Cochrane offers classic Driftless Area scenery, with limestone bluffs rising on both banks and the slow, broad sweep of the Upper Mississippi providing a backdrop for boating, fishing, and watching barge traffic. A short drive north or south along the Great River Road (US-61/WI-35) leads to a string of overlooks and small river towns that have preserved their historic main streets.

Just north of Cochrane lies Merrick State Park, a 322-acre Wisconsin state park that follows the river's sloughs and backwaters. The park offers camping, canoeing, fishing, and miles of hiking trails through bottomland forest, and it is only about a 10-minute drive from the village.

A few miles upriver, the village of Alma, the Buffalo County seat, is one of the most photographed small towns in the Upper Midwest. Perched dramatically on a tall bluff, Alma features long-standing overlooks such as Buena Vista Park, where visitors can gaze out over the Mississippi valley and watch eagles in winter. It is roughly a 15- to 20-minute drive from Cochrane.

A little farther afield, the Great River State Trail, a state-managed rail-trail, runs for about 24 miles through the Wisconsin side of the river valley between Onalaska and Marshland, passing through several small communities and offering cycling and walking routes with regular bluff-top views. Its southern trailhead near Onalaska is about a 40-minute drive from Cochrane.

Cochrane is a compelling base for short-term rentals precisely because of its small scale and setting. Travelers who want to experience the Driftless Area's scenery, the Mississippi River, and a string of historic river towns without the crowds of larger gateway cities find it a quiet, affordable home base, while the proximity to La Crosse and Winona gives visitors easy access to restaurants, breweries, and regional amenities when they want them.
