Lakeview sits in the high desert of south-central Oregon, serving as the county seat of Lake County — one of the largest and least densely settled counties in the state. With roughly 2,300 residents, the town has a quiet, frontier-era character framed by the pine-clad ridges of the Warner Mountains to the east and the broad expanse of Goose Lake straddling the California border just to the south. About 60 to 70 miles to the northeast, Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge protects a sweeping high-country plateau that harbors one of the largest concentrations of pronghorn in the American West. The refuge is also a significant area for sage grouse, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and a reintroduced population of California bighorn, and the rough gravel road leading in is itself part of the experience, climbing from sagebrush flats to a stone-walled rim overlooking the Warner Valley. It appeals most to self-sufficient travelers seeking open space, dark skies, and wildlife viewing well off the main highways.

South of Lakeview, Goose Lake and the surrounding marshlands offer fishing, birding, and a sense of the wide-open country that defines this side of the state line. The lake stretches for more than two dozen miles along the Oregon-California border, and its calm waters and willow-edged shores attract waterfowl, including white pelicans that nest on small islands during the warmer months. Fishing for largemouth bass and trout is a common pursuit, and the lake's quiet backroads are popular with cyclists and birdwatchers passing through the region.

Lakeview makes a compelling base for short-term rentals precisely because of the contrast it offers: a small, walkable town with the services travelers need after long days on the road, ringed by some of the most unspoiled and least-visited country in the lower 48. Guests tend to come for the quiet, the dark skies, the wildlife, and the sense of stepping into a part of the West that has changed very little in a century — and they tend to stay a little longer than they originally planned.
