Alliance sits in Box Butte County in the western Nebraska Panhandle, a high-plains region where the Great Plains begin to give way to the Sandhills. The drive from Alliance is roughly ninety miles and is often paired with a stop at nearby Toadstool Geologic Park, a short trail through mushroom-shaped rock formations in the Oglala National Grassland.

Beyond these specific stops, Alliance itself sits on the edge of the Sandhills, the largest stabilized sand-dune formation in the Western Hemisphere — a vast sea of grass-covered dunes stretching across north-central Nebraska.
