Adjacent to it, the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher focuses on the marine life of the Cape Fear region, from sharks and rays to sea turtles, and is a natural complement to a day spent exploring the southern end of the island.

Across the water, the city of Wilmington offers a more extensive set of cultural and historic attractions, including the Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River, the restored 18th- and 19th-century homes of the Historic District, and the active filming locations that have made the city a popular screen tourism stop. The drive from Carolina Beach into downtown Wilmington typically takes around twenty-five minutes, depending on bridge traffic.
