Sunrise Beach is a small village tucked into Camden County in central Missouri, set along the quieter western shore of the Lake of the Ozarks. With a year-round population of only around 150 to 200 residents, the community has the feel of a laid-back lakeside settlement rather than a busy resort town, and it serves primarily as a gateway to one of the Midwest's largest and most popular recreational reservoirs. It sits roughly 150 miles southwest of St. Louis and about 180 miles southeast of Kansas City, putting it within an easy drive for weekend visitors from both metropolitan areas.

The headline draw is the Lake of the Ozarks itself, a sprawling man-made reservoir with more than 1,100 miles of shoreline that draws boaters, anglers, and swimmers throughout the warmer months. From Sunrise Beach, marinas, public boat ramps, and lakeside restaurants are only minutes away, and the water shapes nearly every kind of stay in the area.

Just a short drive south of the village, Ha Ha Tonka State Park offers a striking change of pace from lake activities. The park is known for the stone ruins of a turn-of-the-century castle, deep sinkholes, natural bridges, and spring-fed creeks, with roughly a dozen miles of hiking trails winding through the karst landscape. It is approximately 20 to 30 minutes from Sunrise Beach by car.

To the north, Lake of the Ozarks State Park is one of Missouri's largest state parks and provides public swimming beaches, additional boat launches, campgrounds, and trails. The historic Bagnell Dam and the adjacent Bagnell Dam Strip, a longstanding cluster of shops, arcades, and lakeside restaurants, lie roughly 20 minutes to the northeast and give visitors a classic Ozarks entertainment stop.

Sunrise Beach works as a short-term-rental base largely because it combines the relaxed, low-traffic atmosphere of a small lakeside village with quick access to the Lake of the Ozarks' full slate of activities. Visitors can spend mornings on the water, afternoons hiking among castle ruins or springs, and evenings at the dam strip, then return to a quieter stretch of shoreline at the end of the day — a balance that the busier commercial hubs around the lake do not always provide.
