Owensville Regulations

STRs are technically allowed in Owensville with no city permits or caps, but extensive private‑community restrictions (e.g., Peaceful Valley’s explicit ban) and nearby municipality moratoriums/caps create significant uncertainty and deter investment.

About Owensville

Owensville is a small city in Gasconade County, in central Missouri, situated along Interstate 44. With a population of approximately 2,500 residents, it carries the character of a quiet rural community that serves as a service hub for the surrounding agricultural area. The city is best known as a gateway to Missouri's German-heritage wine country along the Missouri River and as a convenient stopover between St. Louis and Jefferson City. It lies roughly 70 miles west of St. Louis and about 50 miles east of the state capital, with the rolling hills of the Ozark foothills framing the town to the south.

Just a short drive northeast of Owensville, the historic town of Hermann sits along the Missouri River and forms the heart of Missouri's oldest wine region. Settled by German immigrants in the 1830s, Hermann preserves much of its 19th-century architecture and is home to a compact historic district of stone and brick buildings. Visitors come for the dozen-plus wineries in the surrounding river hills, the annual Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrations, and seasonal riverboat excursions on the Missouri. The drive from Owensville to Hermann typically takes around 30 minutes via state highways through the surrounding countryside.

About 30 miles south of Owensville, Meramec State Park spreads across the Meramec River valley near Sullivan. The park is best known for its access to the Meramec River, where visitors can fish, float, and swim, as well as for its network of hiking and biking trails through the surrounding oak-hickory forest. The area also serves as a base for exploring nearby cave systems, including Meramec Caverns, one of the more developed show caves along the historic Route 66 corridor. The drive from Owensville to the park takes roughly 40 minutes heading south on I-44.

Owensville itself sits within Gasconade County's portion of the Missouri wine trail and along the well-traveled Route 66 corridor, both of which draw road-trippers, weekend wine tourists, and travelers heading onward to the Lake of the Ozarks region further southwest. The city's position near the interstate, combined with its proximity to multiple distinct day-trip destinations, makes it a practical base for visitors who want a quieter, more affordable alternative to staying directly in St. Louis, Hermann, or the Lake of the Ozarks. For short-term-rental owners, Owensville offers a small-town setting that still places guests within easy reach of wine country, river recreation, state-park scenery, and the cultural heritage of central Missouri.
