About Bemidji

Bemidji is a small city in north-central Minnesota that serves as the seat of Beltrami County. With a population of approximately 14,000 to 15,000 residents, it functions as a regional hub surrounded by pine forest, lakes, and river country. The community is famously associated with the Paul Bunyan legend and today is best known as a gateway to the Mississippi headwaters region, especially Itasca State Park, where the great river begins. Bemidji sits roughly 220 miles northwest of Minneapolis–Saint Paul, a drive of about four hours, and serves as a service center for the surrounding lake country and the communities of the Leech Lake and Red Lake reservations to the north.

The most recognizable landmark in Bemidji is the towering Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statue that stands along the lakeshore in downtown. The statues are among the most photographed roadside attractions in the Upper Midwest and anchor a lakeside park and trail system used year-round. Visitors typically pair a stop at the statues with a walk along the Lake Bemidji waterfront, which is a short stroll from the city's compact downtown of locally owned shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as the campus of Bemidji State University.

Just west of the city, Itasca State Park is the marquee natural attraction of the region and a primary reason many travelers pass through Bemidji. Reached in roughly 30 to 40 minutes by car, the park contains the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where visitors can wade across the start of the waterway. The park also features old-growth red and white pines, several thousand acres of lake and forest, and a network of trails used for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing across the seasons.

For visitors who want to stay closer to town, Lake Bemidji itself offers boating, paddling, fishing, and swimming in warmer months, and the surrounding chain of lakes draws anglers and boaters all summer long. In winter, Bemidji is a busy hub for snowmobiling, ice fishing, and Nordic skiing, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails radiating from the city. The nearby Chippewa National Forest adds even more options for paddling, wildlife viewing, and backcountry recreation within an easy drive of town, while the Sanford Center hosts regional events and concerts throughout the year.

Bemidji is a compelling base for short-term rentals because it pairs small-city conveniences and amenities with direct access to a remarkable natural landscape. Guests can spend the morning hiking or sightseeing at a flagship state park and return by evening to a downtown dinner on the lake, all without long drives. The mix of year-round outdoor draws, a recognizable cultural identity tied to Paul Bunyan, and its role as the service hub of north-central Minnesota make the city a natural fit for travelers exploring the region.
