Escanaba, MI

Escanaba is a small city on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, serving as the county seat of Delta County and the largest community in the area. With a population of roughly 12,500, it sits along Little Bay de Noc, an inlet of Lake Michigan, and has long functioned as a commercial and cultural hub for the surrounding region. The city carries a working waterfront character, with a long history tied to iron ore shipping, lumber, and commercial fishing, and it remains best known as a convenient gateway to the natural attractions of the central Upper Peninsula. The nearest major city is Green Bay, Wisconsin, located about 65 miles to the south across the state line.

One of the most visited historic sites in the area is Fayette Historic State Park, a remarkably preserved nineteenth-century iron-smelting company town on the Lake Michigan shoreline. About 35 miles south of Escanaba, the park features more than twenty restored buildings, a visitor center, and cliff-top views over Big Bay de Noc, offering visitors a tangible sense of Upper Peninsula industrial history in a striking natural setting.

The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Hiawatha National Forest, which sprawls across much of the eastern Upper Peninsula and reaches right up to the outskirts of Escanaba. A short drive north along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is roughly three hours away near Munising, and the gateway to Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge lies about two and a half hours north via the Upper Peninsula's interior. Together with the immediate access to forests, bays, and small-town amenities, Escanaba offers short-term rental owners a base that feels genuinely local yet close to some of the Midwest's most recognizable outdoor destinations.
