Biddeford, ME

Biddeford is a small coastal city in York County, Maine, with a population of roughly 22,000 to 23,000 residents. It sits at the mouth of the Saco River where it meets the Atlantic, and it carries a working-class character that has been redefined in recent years by the redevelopment of its textile-mill district into a dense cluster of breweries, restaurants, coffee shops, and loft apartments. Often regarded as a more affordable, less polished alternative to its neighbor to the northeast, Biddeford serves as a gateway to the sandy beaches, salt marshes, and small harbor towns of southern Maine's York County coast. The city lies approximately 15 to 20 miles southwest of Portland, the nearest major city, an easy drive up US-1 or I-95, and it is also served by Amtrak's Downeaster service.

Just to the south of Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach is one of southern Maine's most recognizable summer destinations, known for its roughly seven-mile stretch of white sand and its classic wooden pier that stretches out over the surf. It is only about a 10-minute drive from downtown Biddeford and tends to draw families and visitors who want a traditional New England beach experience with amusement-park rides, fried-clam shacks, and live music nearby.

A short drive south as well, Ferry Beach State Park offers a quieter alternative, with about a mile of sandy shoreline, shaded campground loops, and short walking trails through fragrant pine and oak forest. A short drive east of Biddeford, the refuge has several walking trails and observation points that are good for birding, especially during spring and fall migrations, and it offers a different, wilder side of the coast than the town's beaches.

Closer to home, Biddeford's own revitalized downtown along Main Street and the Saco River waterfront has become a destination in its own right, with former mill buildings now housing craft breweries, distilleries, and small live-music venues that draw visitors from across the region.

Taken together, Biddeford's location between Portland and the beaches of York County, its walkable and increasingly lively downtown, and its easy access to both the Atlantic shoreline and inland natural areas make it a compelling base for short-term rentals, particularly for travelers who want the energy of a Maine coast vacation without the peak-season prices of better-known towns.
