Manchester-by-the-Sea is a small coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts, set along the rocky and sandy shores of the state's North Shore. A short drive north brings visitors to the rest of Cape Ann, beginning with Gloucester, roughly ten minutes from Manchester. Gloucester is a working harbor city with a long fishing heritage, galleries, and the Fisherman's Memorial on the waterfront. Continuing another fifteen minutes or so up the coast, Rockport draws day-trippers with its harbor at Bearskin Neck, the red fishing shack known as Motif No. 1, and a compact downtown of shops and seafood spots. Together, the Cape Ann towns create a full day of exploring within a small radius of Manchester.

To the south, Salem lies about twelve miles away and adds a different dimension to the area, with its seventeenth-century witch trial history, the Peabody Essex Museum, the House of the Seven Gables, and a livelier waterfront restaurant and nightlife scene.

Manchester-by-the-Sea works well as a short-term rental base precisely because it threads the needle between accessibility and seclusion. Visitors can settle into a quiet coastal community, walk to a celebrated beach, and use the town as a launching point for Cape Ann, Salem, and even day trips into Boston. The combination of in-town amenities, scenic surroundings, and proximity to several of Massachusetts' most recognizable destinations gives the town broad seasonal appeal, with a steady stream of travelers throughout the warmer months and into the fall foliage season.
