Poland Regulations

STRs are legally allowed nationwide, with permitting managed at the city level, often simple or low-cost (e.g., free registration in Kraków and Gdańsk) but requiring multiple documents (registration, fire/health compliance, tax/VAT, tourism tax) and upcoming EU platform data-sharing (May 2026). No nationwide caps are indicated, and enforcement appears procedural rather than hostile, though municipal variability and compliance steps deter a higher grade.

About Poland

Poland is a small town in Androscoggin County in southwestern Maine, with a population of roughly 5,800 residents. It sits in a region of rolling woodlands, lakes, and family farms that has long drawn summer visitors from Boston, New York, and beyond. The town is best known as the home of the Poland Spring water source, which put the area on the national map in the late 1800s and gave its name to one of the most recognizable bottled-water brands in the country. Poland lies about 40 miles north of Portland, Maine, the nearest major city, and is just a short drive from the larger Lewiston-Auburn metropolitan area, giving it both rural calm and easy access to urban amenities.

A short drive from the center of town, Range Ponds State Park is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the region, covering a couple of hundred acres along the shore of Lower Range Pond. Visitors come for swimming, picnicking, and easy loop hikes, and the park tends to fill up on warm summer weekends with families from across central and southern Maine. The park entrance is roughly a ten-minute drive from most points in Poland, making it a natural fit for vacationers who want a low-key beach day without traveling to the coast.

The historic Poland Spring site, just off Route 26 near the heart of the town, is the other defining attraction. For generations, travelers came to the Poland Spring Resort to take the waters and escape city heat, and while the grand old hotel is no longer operating, the area retains a quiet sense of place tied to the spring and to the museum housed in the original bottling plant. Visitors today can stop to sample the water, browse exhibits about the spring's history, and walk the grounds that once welcomed Gilded Age tourists.

Slightly farther afield, the city of Auburn sits just to the south and offers year-round entertainment at Lost Valley, a small but lively ski and tubing hill that has been a family favorite for decades. In the warmer months, the same area turns to mountain biking and scenic chairlift rides, giving short-term-rental guests a convenient four-season activity without a long drive.

Taken together, Poland offers the kind of small-town Maine setting that travelers increasingly seek out: lake country, a celebrated historical landmark, nearby state-park recreation, and ski hills all within a short radius, yet still within easy reach of Portland's restaurants and the Atlantic coast. For short-term-rental owners, that mix of seasonal outdoor appeal, established tourist identity, and proximity to a major city makes Poland a quietly compelling base for year-round bookings.
