About Ottawa

Ottawa is a small city in north-central Illinois that serves as the county seat of LaSalle County. With a population of roughly 18,000, it sits at the meeting point of the Illinois River and the Fox River, giving it a classic Midwestern river-town character anchored by an older brick downtown and a surrounding landscape of river bluffs and wooded canyons. Ottawa is best known as a gateway to Starved Rock Country, a cluster of state parks and outdoor destinations that draw visitors year-round. It lies approximately 80 miles southwest of Chicago, a drive of about ninety minutes to two hours depending on traffic, which positions it within easy reach of the Chicago metropolitan area while feeling a world away.

Just a few minutes south of town, Starved Rock State Park is by far the region's marquee attraction. The park is celebrated for its sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and bluff-top overlooks along the south bank of the Illinois River, with more than thirteen miles of well-marked hiking trails. Visitors come for everything from easy family walks to more strenuous canyon hikes, and the park's lodge and cabins add an overnight lodging option for travelers who want to extend their stay.

A short drive east of Ottawa, Buffalo Rock State Park offers a quieter, family-friendly complement to Starved Rock. Set on a bluff overlooking the Illinois River, the park is known for its small herd of bison, woodland trails, and a handful of woodland effigy mounds left by earlier inhabitants. It functions well as a half-day stop and pairs naturally with a Starved Rock visit.

Ottawa itself is also known as a destination for skydiving. Skydive Chicago operates out of the Ottawa area and is one of the largest skydiving centers in the country, attracting tandem jumpers, licensed skydivers, and competitive teams from across the Midwest. Even visitors who never plan to jump often come to watch the activity at the airport on busy weekends.

Downtown Ottawa rounds out the appeal with a walkable historic core along the Illinois and Fox rivers. The area includes the nineteenth-century red sandstone LaSalle County Courthouse, locally owned restaurants, antique shops, and riverfront paths that connect to public parks and boat launches along the Illinois River.

For short-term rental owners, Ottawa offers a compelling mix of small-city character and outdoor-recreation access within a couple of hours of Chicago. Its position as the northern gateway to Starved Rock Country, combined with river-based recreation, a recognizable skydiving scene, and a preserved historic downtown, gives it a year-round visitor base that supports a range of traveler types, from weekend hikers and Chicago escapees to families and adventure tourists.
