Spirit Lake, ID

Spirit Lake is a small city in Kootenai County, Idaho, with a population of roughly 2,200 residents. The town has a quiet, outdoorsy character, surrounded by the pine and fir forests of northern Idaho's Panhandle region. It takes its name from the glacial lake just outside town and serves as a year-round gateway to the lakes, mountains, and rivers of the Inland Northwest. Spirit Lake sits about 30 miles northeast of Coeur d'Alene and roughly 55 miles east of Spokane, Washington, putting it within an easy drive of two regional hubs while retaining a distinctly rural, small-town feel.

One of the closest draws is Silverwood Theme Park, the largest theme and water park in the Pacific Northwest, located just outside the nearby town of Athol. The park features roller coasters, a vintage car collection, and the Boulder Beach water park, and it typically operates from spring through fall, drawing visitors from across the region and from neighboring Canada. From Spirit Lake, the drive to Silverwood is roughly ten to fifteen minutes along Highway 54.

A short drive east leads to Farragut State Park, a roughly 4,000-acre park on the southern shore of Lake Pend Oreille. Once the site of the largest naval training station in the world during World War II, the park today offers camping, hiking and biking trails, an interpretive museum, and access to the lake's sandy beaches. It is about 25 to 30 minutes from Spirit Lake via Highway 54 and US-95.

Lake Pend Oreille itself is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the United States, and its 111 miles of shoreline form the centerpiece of recreation in the region. Boating, sailing, and fishing for Kamloops rainbow trout are popular pursuits, and several marinas and lakeside campgrounds are within a short drive of Spirit Lake. To the southwest, the city of Coeur d'Alene sits along the lake of the same name, about 35 to 40 minutes away, with its floating boardwalk, lakefront resort, and signature floating green drawing visitors year-round.

With its small-town pace, forested setting, and proximity to major regional attractions, Spirit Lake offers short-term rental owners a base that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts, theme-park families, and lake vacationers alike. Its position between Coeur d'Alene and the larger recreation areas to the north and east gives visitors a quieter, more affordable alternative to staying directly in the busier resort towns, while keeping the region's marquee destinations within a short and scenic drive.
