About Lewiston

Lewiston sits at the meeting point of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers in north-central Idaho, in Nez Perce County, with a population of roughly 33,000. It is the largest city in the region and serves as a gateway to some of the most dramatic outdoor landscapes in the inland Northwest, including Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. The city has a working-river character, a compact historic downtown, and a college-town feel thanks to Lewis-Clark State College, and it is paired across the river with Clarkston, Washington. The nearest major city is Spokane, Washington, about three and a half hours to the northwest.

Just south of town, Hells Gate State Park offers riverside camping, hiking trails, and direct access to the Snake River within roughly fifteen minutes of downtown Lewiston. The park is a popular base for fishing, swimming, and picnicking, and it anchors the southern edge of the Lewiston–Clarkston valley with views of the river canyon.

The wide Clearwater and Snake Rivers are themselves a major draw, and jet-boat excursions, rafting trips, and steelhead and salmon fishing are signature parts of the regional experience. Local outfitters run trips deep into Hells Canyon and up the Salmon and Snake Rivers, often departing right from the Lewiston waterfront. The confluence area also serves as a hub for scenic drives, with winding backroads climbing into the surrounding canyons and forested plateaus.

The region is closely tied to the history of the Nez Perce people, and Nez Perce National Historical Park preserves a series of sites across north-central Idaho, including locations in and around Lewiston. The park's visitor center and several trail-side stops give travelers a chance to explore Native American history, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the broader story of the inland Pacific Northwest.

A short drive east of town, the rolling Camas Prairie and the Clearwater River canyons open up into the Clearwater and Nez Perce–Clearwater National Forests, while the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness lies within reach for visitors willing to drive a bit further for hiking, backpacking, and whitewater on the Lochsa and Selway Rivers.

Lewiston is a compelling base for short-term rentals because it pairs small-city convenience with rare access to some of the West's most striking river country. Guests can spend a day hiking the rim of Hells Canyon, learning about the Nez Perce homeland, or sampling river adventures, then return to a walkable downtown with restaurants, riverfront parks, and lodging that makes an easy home base for exploring the wider region.
