Donnelly Regulations

Donnelly allows STRs citywide and treats them as a permitted use in residential zones, with a moderate two‑permit process (city business license and county STR permit) and annual renewal/reporting; occupancy caps (12 people) and clear parking/utility/safety rules are straightforward to meet. The compliance path is clearly defined via the county portal and city ordinance, keeping investor risk manageable while still requiring standard permitting and tax registration.

About Donnelly

Donnelly is a small city in Valley County, Idaho, with a population of roughly 150 to 200 residents. It sits in the middle of Long Valley, a broad mountain basin framed by the Payette National Forest, and has a quiet, outdoorsy character rooted in ranching and seasonal tourism. The town is best known as a low-key stopping point between the larger resort communities of McCall, to the north, and Cascade, to the south, and it serves as a convenient gateway to Lake Cascade, Tamarack Resort, and the surrounding national forest. It lies approximately 100 miles north of Boise, the nearest major city, reached via State Highway 55 through a scenic mountain corridor.

Just a few miles west of Donnelly, Tamarack Resort is one of the area's marquee four-season destinations. The resort offers skiing and snowboarding in winter and mountain biking, hiking, and zip-lining in summer, along with a small lake used for non-motorized water sports. It is roughly a 10- to 15-minute drive from Donnelly and draws visitors in every season.

About ten miles north of Donnelly, the town of McCall sits on the shore of Payette Lake, a deep glacial lake popular for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming in warmer months. Nearby Ponderosa State Park protects a large forested peninsula with miles of trails and lakeside campsites, making it a favorite stop for families exploring the region.

South of Donnelly, Lake Cascade is one of Idaho's largest reservoirs and a major draw for fishing, boating, and birdwatching. The lake is roughly a 15-minute drive from town and offers numerous public access points and small communities spread along its approximately 90 miles of shoreline. The surrounding valleys and foothills also provide hiking, hot-spring soaking, and winter snowmobiling within a short drive of Donnelly.

Donnelly is a compelling base for short-term rentals because of its central position in Long Valley, its proximity to four-season recreation, and the relative affordability of lodging compared with the busier resort town of McCall. Visitors who want easy access to skiing, lake activities, and the Payette National Forest often find that staying in Donnelly offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative while keeping all of the region's main attractions within a short drive.
