Winterset is a small city and the county seat of Madison County, Iowa, with a population of approximately 5,000 people. It sits among the rolling hills and farmland of south-central Iowa, about 35 miles southwest of Des Moines, the state's capital and nearest major city. The community has the feel of a classic Midwestern county seat, anchored by a brick-lined town square and an ornate 19th-century courthouse. Winterset is best known for two things that have put it on the national map: as the birthplace of legendary actor John Wayne, and as the home of the covered bridges of Madison County, immortalized in Robert James Waller's novel and the 1995 film.

The John Wayne Birthplace & Museum honors the actor born here in 1907 as Marion Robert Morrison. The restored four-room home reflects the period of his early years, while the adjoining museum displays film costumes, posters, scripts, and personal artifacts spanning his six-decade career. It sits just a few blocks south of the town square and is the centerpiece of the town's heritage tourism.

The Madison County Covered Bridges draw visitors from around the world who come to walk through the same weathered wooden structures featured in the famous love story. Six historic bridges remain in the county, with the Roseman Bridge and the Hogback Bridge among the most photographed. A scenic driving tour winds through roughly 25 miles of county roads, and the annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival each October brings craft vendors, regional food, and fall color to the area.

The Winterset town square itself functions as a destination, with the 1876 Romanesque Revival Madison County Courthouse at its heart and a ring of locally owned shops, antique stores, and cafes. The Iowa Quilt Museum, housed in a restored 19th-century building on the square, features rotating exhibits of American quilting and textile arts and serves as a quiet draw for craft-minded travelers passing through.
