Willows, CA

Willows is a small agricultural city in northern California's Sacramento Valley, serving as the county seat of Glenn County. With an approximate population of around 6,000 residents, the city has the relaxed, close-knit feel typical of rural farming communities, surrounded by orchards, rice fields, and cattle pastures. Willows sits along Interstate 5, roughly 90 miles north of Sacramento and about 140 miles northeast of San Francisco, making it a convenient stopping point for travelers heading between the Bay Area, the Pacific coast, and the Pacific Northwest. The town is best known as a gateway to the surrounding outdoor landscapes of the Coast Ranges and Sacramento Valley, including extensive national forest lands and a number of popular lakes and refuges.

To the west of Willows, Mendocino National Forest covers nearly a million acres of rugged, forested terrain in the Coast Range. The forest is roughly a 45- to 60-minute drive from town and offers hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, and wildlife viewing across its many canyons, ridges, and designated wilderness areas. Visitors pass through Willows on their way to trailheads, lake resorts, and remote stretches of backcountry that feel far removed from the agricultural valley below.

Just west of the city, Black Butte Lake is a man-made reservoir that has become a popular regional recreation spot about 20 to 25 minutes from Willows. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lake offers fishing, swimming, boating, and several campgrounds along its shoreline, drawing families and outdoor enthusiasts from across the Sacramento Valley during the warmer months.

A short drive south of Willows, the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge provides one of the most important wetland habitats for migratory waterfowl on the Pacific Flyway. Roughly 10 to 15 minutes from town, the refuge features an auto tour route and walking trails where visitors can observe geese, ducks, sandhill cranes, and raptors in their natural setting, especially during the fall and winter migrations.

Just a few miles west of Willows, Thunderhill Raceway Park is a well-known motorsports facility that hosts club races, driving schools, and major events throughout the year, drawing participants and spectators from across the western United States.

Willows offers short-term rental owners a chance to serve a varied audience, from outdoor recreationists bound for the national forest and nearby lakes, to birdwatchers visiting the wildlife refuges, to motorsports travelers and road trippers passing through on Interstate 5.
